Canberra’s multicultural community on show at International Day

30 January, 2017

Striped handcrafted African basket at the Old Bus Depot Markets from specialist stallholder for International Day, OgomehCelebrate Canberra’s rich and diverse multicultural community at this year’s International Day. Taking place on Sunday 12 February 2017, this is the day to ‘travel the world’ within the market surrounds and explore the many cultures which call the nation’s capital home.

At International Day, you can sample an array of delicious multicultural foods including food from Laos, Ethiopia, France, Thailand, Jordan, Germany, Serbia and Italy, be entertained by local ethnic music and dance groups performing traditional dances, and buy gifts handcrafted in faraway lands.

New to International Day this year is Patricia Martey with her handcrafts business, Ogomeh. Ogomeh brings a collection of hand crafted products by African artisans including amazing baskets from Ghana and Zimbabwe such as wave bowls, drum bowls and carry baskets, as well as hats, laundry hampers and ottomans. Ogomeh is passionate about ethically sourcing handcrafted traditional African basketry from and around Africa by African artisans and craftspeople, and does so to support artisans in a developing country to generate an income, support a family, and help keep traditional African crafts alive.

You’ll also find glorious Indian block-printed textiles from Sarah Bartram on the day, as well as handcrafted silk handbags from Thailand, Russian baboushka art, hand painted ceramic plates from Italy, French provincial tablecloths, Vietnamese lanterns and more.
